So sad...
... that I felt the need to compare, but Taylor Swift's blank zombie expression in the Love Story video is bugging the hell out of me. The lyrics keep reminding me of a blanded down, completely-missing-the-point version of Mindy McCready's Romeo. Also, that was written by Matraca Berg (=instant country classic goodness).
(just wound up reading what happened to McCready... gawd, no wonder she hasn't released anything in yonks. Something of a country diva cliche, sadly, once you add up all the domestic abuse, suicide attempts, arrests and prescription drug abuse. Don't remember reading a word of it when it happened, which makes it kinda ironic that the only video of her singing Romeo on Youtube is the UK tv appearance on the Lottery show. That was kinda surreal.)
And, also kinda on the subject of tweeny divas, out of Hillary Duff's Reach Out and Miley Cyrus's Fly on the Wall.. er, I think Miley strangely emerged with a tad more dignity intact, despite spending the video running from paparazzi. Hillary has a whole freaky!Britney thing going on when, let's face it, it's hard to be more freaky than Britney herself right now (Circus=boring. But I'm kinda intrigued by the whole If You See Amy furore...
Ah.. If it's Thursday, Benjamin Linus must be sporting a black eye...
After all the trauma of last week, it was probably a good thing that we didn't have to see Dan have the inevitable OMGCHARLOTTE'S DEAD meltdown just yet. Although it will probably be a very quiet meltdown, the way Dan's going...
So instead we got one of those episodes that play a bit like a dream sequence, what with the giant pendulum, switching shoes on a corpse in a meat locker and random Jate seks. Plus the whole proxies thing... Although, everyone turning up at the airport was a classic moment. And Frank's (surprisingly clean shaven) face when he gradually caught sight of all the O6 in the cabin :o) "We're not going to Guam, are we?" Nope Frank. Sorry mate!
Ack. Sun obviously left Ji Yeon behind with her mum in the end, then. What the hell did Kate do with Aaron? There aren't that many options, obviously, and number one is going to be Claire's mum. I'm guessing she's still not talking to her own ma, assuming she even lived that long.. Otherwise there was a nanny, I think? Somebody had to have looked after him when she was in jail before her trial, and I assumed it was the nanny then. But it did look kinda permanent this time, going by Kate's zombie impression afterwards. And the whole jumping Jack thing, of course.
Teeny bit frustrating that everyone is letting Eloise get away with her cryptic ramblings without really demanding explanations - nobody's wondering why she seems supremely unconcerned about her own son being stranded on the island. And Ben didn't even seem to know they were related..
Well, two options for Ben's face looking all familiar and beaten to a pulp, really - Desmond caught him anywhere near Penny &Charlie, or that's the reason Sayid is currently handcuffed and escorted by a rather fetching law enforcement person. Although, whatever the hell reason Sayid was arrested, I can't for the life of me work out why he would be on a plane to Guam. Is it enroute to Iraq or something? Seriously. It's not like you can be deported somewhere that instantly unless you're being sent home, surely?
Heheh. Jin gets all the cool entrances, for the second week running :o) Now where the hell is Sun?! I want my emotional reunion after you killed off my ship last week, dammit Darlton!
Just to cap off a seriously confusing night of TV, there was an exceedingly silly ep of Bones (but only in the slot when I had been watching the equally silly Hustle, so that's alright then) with conjoined twins! and circuses! and Brennan and Booth had to go undercover! As a knife throwing act! Daft but sadly very watchable, if not remotely believable. There was a sidecar and motorbike too. the mind boggles.
I can't really be bothered watching Sarah Connor at the US pace at the mo, so tonight was Alpine Fields - fabulous stuff, actually. All the things I watch this show for - the time loops feeding back and forward onto themselves (why does no one ever mention Heinlein's All You Zombies in this show? Terminator was the first thing I thought of when I read that story), the future war stuff, and ooh, look Sarah got to be a better mum than someone else for a change (Catherine Weaver doesn't count!). And Derek and Jesse meeting, and immediately nearly dying together.. No wonder they were so close - except now she's back to mess him up, possibly/probably...
And keep forgetting that i watched the pilot of Dollhouse at the weekend.. which strangely didn't feel Whedonesque. That was unexpected. In fact, the first part felt a lot like the Dark Angel pilot, and the second half felt like I'd wandered into an ep of Criminal Minds by mistake, but worked much better. The programming breaking down was very cool - felt like an actual reason to watch rather than the 'ooh look at our set-up!' showing off of the first part. I'd have expected almost exactly that from JJ Abrams, actually - it was like a cartoony Alias at times - but not from Whedon. Wasn't nearly crazy/sexy/cool enough for Whedon. And not funny. The tech guy (Topher?) was obviously the Xander/Wash character, but waaay too creepy/sinister to quite work..
I loved..
the moment when Echo was riffing theories with her handler
when she was establishing the rapport with the client and the kidnapper
the storming in and psyching out the kidnappers in the shack, and rescuing the little girl, and her reaction to Sierra's supersoldier stomping in...
Not loving..
the whole little girly innocent Echo when she's been wiped. Maybe i keep expecting a little Crazy River to creep in (Summer Glau would have rocked at this bit) but it's just irritating really. Especially when you've already seen that Echo's 'original' personality was basically a less ballistic Faith.
It's hard finding a viewpoint character when star of the show Echo doesn't remember a damn thing from week to week - this could prove tricky. Are we meant to be rooting for Tamoh instead? Cos we already know way more than he does...
